THE
HUMANE COMPUTING FUND
The
ugly side of this Promethianism is thoughtless, an empty-headed immersion
in the delights of technics with no thought to goals or meaning; so
man performs on the moon by hitting golf balls that do not swerve
in the lack of atmosphere. The technical triumph of a versatile ape,
as the makers of the film 2001
so chillingly conveyed to us.
-Ernest Becker, The Denial of Death
The Dreadmill project
has led to the creation of a new grant-awarding fund sponsored by
the Ernest Becker Foundation (http://www.ernestbecker.org).
The purpose of this new fund is outlined in the mission below, which
was designed to honor the intellectual work of Ernest Becker.
MISSION
OF THE FUND
The Humane Computing Fund supports research and artistic work
that seeks to enhance human being rather than outstrip it.
ABOUT THE
AWARD
Drawing on this fund, and in fulfillment of its mission, a committee
of members from the Ernest Becker Foundation will solicit nominations
each year for a recipient of the Humane Computing Award.
This award will be given to a scholar or artist who works with technology
in a way that does not seek to deny the limitations of human being,
but rather, explores or celebrates them. Additional details will be
available in October, 2005.Please contact Marcel O'Gorman (marcel
at e-crit.com) if you have questions.
